Afternoon Earthquake Damages A Two Story Apartment Building

By Jackawa Jackson | May 19, 2009

On the evening of May 19, 2009 at 7:52 pm, Long Beach Fire Department units responded to 2284 Locust Ave for a report of a 2 story garden style apartment building in danger of collapse.  Once on scene, they found a 10 foot by 70 foot section of wall on the second floor peeling away at the roof line.  Residents stated the wall began cracking during the earthquake that occurred earlier in the afternoon.  Nine apartment units were evacuated with 18 residents displaced.  Families were referred to The Red Cross in an effort to provide shelter.  A city building inspector was contacted in order to check the integrity of the remainder of the building.  Fortunately no injuries or deaths were reported. Long Beach Fire Department units continued to operate on scene well into the evening.  Station 7 and Battalion 3 responded to this incident.
