Hotel Fire on 5th St

By Matthew Dobberpuhl | February 15, 2011

Long Beach Fire Department resources were dispatched at 12:37am this morning in response to reports of a structure fire at 127 W. 5th St.  Engine 1 arrived on scene in three minutes and encountered a fully involved apartment fire with heavy smoke and flames pouring out of the second floor windows.  Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior attack with hose lines while others laddered the roof and cut ventilation holes to clear the structure of heat and smoke.  Firefighters searched the building for occupants and found an elderly male in a unit adjacent to the fire.  He suffered a severe inhalation injury and was immediately transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center.  The fire was knocked down in six minutes.  Red Cross was called out to assist the 15 residents who were displaced.  The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.  A Battalion Chief, 24 Firefighters and 2 Arson Investigators responded to this incident that occurred in the 1st Council District.
