On Wednesday, September 23, 2009 Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) units Engine 6, Engine 10, Engine 11, Rescue 13, Rescue 11 and Battalion Chief 5 participated in a confined space drill at the LBFD training center.<\/p>\n
The purpose of the drill was to simulate the rescue of a trapped worker in an underground concrete piping network. Working in a confined space is very hazardous.\u00a0 There is danger from lack of oxygen, accumulation of toxic or explosive gases as well as physical dangers presented by the space itself.\u00a0 All of the US&R members worked in conjunction, utilizing various lowering and raising systems in an effort to extricate the patient from the space.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The evolution, even though a simulation, needed to be well choreographed in order to insure the safety of the rescuers and the patient. These types of exercises allow all of our US&R members to gain confidence working in confined spaces as well as maintain a high level of training in the latest rescue practices.<\/p>\n
