On the morning of October 30th,\u00a0 LBFD conducted a large scale earthquake drill as part of this months COCEP training.\u00a0 The drill began at 10:00am with a simulated 7.8 earthquake and the implementation of our earthquake policy.\u00a0 Initial command and control functions were carried out from the back of the BC vehicles.\u00a0\u00a0Soon after, the DOC (Department Operation Center)\u00a0was activated upstairs\u00a0at headquarters.\u00a0 The DOC was staffed by the assistant chiefs and personnel from headquarters.\u00a0 multiple companies, in the large classroom at headquarters,\u00a0acted as role players in a green-cell exercise.\u00a0The room was divided up and each of the three tables represented a fire district.\u00a0Role-players delivered a constant stream of realistic updates to the DOC and the BC’s concerning situations that may be encountered in an earthquake of this magnitude.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u00a0This drill was an excellent learning experience for all those involved.\u00a0It was concluded\u00a0by allowing\u00a0members to\u00a0comment on things that went well and things that they would change.\u00a0One point that was\u00a0emphasized by all of the BC’s involved\u00a0was the need for an aid in these situations.\u00a0 Initially,\u00a0 there\u00a0will be a large volume of radio traffic concerning emergencies encountered and an effective way to maintain track of units and developing conditions is to have one person listening and one writing.\u00a0<\/p>\n
At the end, it was agreed that the drill was a huge success.\u00a0 Although we all hope never to have to put the earthquake policy into action\u00a0on a real incident,\u00a0 the day may come when we may.\u00a0 As the saying goes,\u00a0 “Hope for the best but prepare for the worst.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
