{"id":4832,"date":"2014-03-06T12:57:06","date_gmt":"2014-03-06T20:57:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/firechannel.org\/blog\/?p=4832"},"modified":"2014-03-06T12:57:06","modified_gmt":"2014-03-06T20:57:06","slug":"long-beach-fire-department-lifeguard-tryouts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/firechannel.org\/blog\/?p=4832","title":{"rendered":"Long Beach Fire Department Lifeguard Tryouts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Saturday March 15, 2014, beginning at 8:00 a.m. the Long Beach Fire Department will hold an open test for anyone interested in becoming a Seasonal Lifeguard.\u00a0 Tryouts will be held at the Long Beach Lifeguard Beach Operations located at 2100 East Ocean Blvd (enter off Junipero Ave. for parking lot).<\/p>\n<p>See below for qualifications, exam schedule, and duties.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Qualifications<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No prior training or experience is required<\/li>\n<li>17 years of age as of July 1, 2014 &#8211; Proof of age required at time of conditional employment offer (valid Driver\u2019s License or Birth Certificate).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Any applicant under 18 years of age must possess a valid work permit from his or her high school, high school diploma or G.E.D. prior to the start of the training program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Exam Schedule<\/span><\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>8:00 a.m.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Briefing and Sign-up<\/p>\n<p>9:00 a.m.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Ocean swim, 1000-yards<\/p>\n<p>9:30 a.m.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Run-Swim-Run<\/p>\n<p>12:00 p.m.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Announce candidate list for pre-employment scored oral interview<\/p>\n<p>12:30 p.m.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Pre-employment interviews begin<\/p>\n<p>2:30 p.m.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Pre-employee briefing<\/p>\n<p>The 1000-yard ocean swim, run-swim-run, and the pre-employment scored oral interviews will determine who qualifies for the Training Program.\u00a0 Candidates will enter into the training program after successful completion of all pre-employment forms and a medical exam.<\/p>\n<p>The 8-day, 80-hour Training Program is tentatively scheduled for the following four (4) consecutive weekends:\u00a0 Saturday, May 10-Sunday, May 11; May 17-18; May 24-25 and May 31-June 1.\u00a0 Training will be from 8:00 a.m. to approximately 6:00 p.m. daily and include training in lifeguard tactics, lifeguard operations, first aid, D.O.T. first responder, cardiopulmonary<b> <\/b>resuscitation, mechanical resuscitators, rescue buoys, rescue boards, and timed events.\u00a0 Day 8 will include comprehensive written and practical testing.<\/p>\n<p>Trainees must successfully complete the Training Program to continue employment and may be assigned a schedule for the 2014 season.\u00a0 Schedules will be assigned based upon total scores accumulated during the Training Program.\u00a0 The starting pay for a Seasonal Lifeguard is $19.20 per hour, upon completion of the Lifeguard Training Academy.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ocean Lifeguard Duties<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Watch a designated section of the beach and water from an assigned station<\/li>\n<li>Answer calls for help and perform rescue and resuscitation work<\/li>\n<li>Warn bathers of beach and water hazards<\/li>\n<li>Administer first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation<\/li>\n<li>Use and maintain rescue equipment<\/li>\n<li>Take charge of lost children<\/li>\n<li>Answer questions of beach visitors<\/li>\n<li>Advise regarding local beach and waterway related ordinances<\/li>\n<li>Serve as a crewmember or ride-along on rescue boats and in lifeguard vehicles<\/li>\n<li>Assist in salvage operations of small boats and their property<\/li>\n<li>Complete and maintain activity records<\/li>\n<li>Perform other related duties as required<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"># # #<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Saturday March 15, 2014, beginning at 8:00 a.m. the Long Beach Fire Department will hold an open test for anyone interested in becoming a Seasonal Lifeguard.\u00a0 Tryouts will be held at the Long Beach Lifeguard Beach Operations located at 2100 East Ocean Blvd (enter off Junipero Ave. for parking lot).
