LBFD US&R Team Rappels Off Of 15th Story Roof of the Hilton Hotel To Help Save A Suicidal Woman

On Saturday, May 22, 2010 at 2:39 PM, Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) units, responded to a reported suicidal female hanging out of an eight (8) story window at the Hilton Hotel located at 701 W OCEAN BLVD, LONG BEACH, CA 90831. The first arriving unit immediately recognized the potential complexity of this situation and requested additional apparatus and personnel including the Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) team, and the negotiation team and other officers from the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD). During the four-hour negotiation process, the female finally pulled back away from the window for a brief time period. At this time through the coordinated effort of two of the US&R team members rappelling off of the fifteenth story roof to the eight floor to block the window, and the LBPD breaking down the door. The female was subdued without incident or injury; she was evaluated at the scene by Paramedics and transported by the LBPD for treatment to a local hospital. During this incident Ocean Blvd from the 710 Freeway to Magnolia Avenue was shut down to traffic. However once this incident was brought under control all traffic was let through this thorough fair including the family and guest's of a couple scheduled to be married at the hotel that evening. This incident occurred in council district two (2) with a total of 9 apparatus and 24 personnel working on this incident for over four hours. The LBPD also had multiple resources and personnel on scene, and through their combined efforts were able to save someone who felt that life had become unbearable.
