Pit Rescue of a Fallen Construction Worker

By Steve Yamamoto | January 11, 2011

On Monday, January 10, 2011 at 11:12 A.M., Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) units responded to a reported incident at 7th Street and Bennet Avenue consisting of a fall of approximately 10 feet at an extrication construction site. Engine 4 was the first arriving unit and reported that the extrication site was comprised of an area that encompassed approximately 40 feet deep by 40 feet wide. Truck 17 in conjunction with the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Team completed a Ladder Pick-Off operation to bring the patient from the floor to surface level.  This operation consists of a rope system rigged off the end of the truck aerial ladder with the other end connected to a Stokes Basket with the patient securely harnessed to it.

The patient was an approximate 40-year-old male listed in stable condition on scene with a possible loss on consciousness due to the fall.  His primary complaint was of neck and back pain.  He was treated with continued cervical spine precautions and transported to a local trauma center by Rescue 2.

An investigation is on going to determine the cause of the fall and to prevent further incidents from occurring.  A total of 7 apparatus and 12 personnel responded to this call that occurred in City Council District 3.
