Annual Holiday Canned Food Drive

By Steve Yamamoto | October 31, 2011

The Long Beach Fire Department will once again be participating in the annual Holiday Canned Food Drive starting November 1st through the end of the year.  This program operates very similarly to the Spark of Love Toy Drive.  Large cardboard donation boxes will be placed at all Long Beach Fire Stations for the general public and Firefighters to drop off their canned or dry goods for those less fortunate.  These donations can be made during normal business hours (8:00 AM to 5:00 PM), seven days a week.  Once collected, the food donations will be given to the organization "Food Finders" in Long Beach.  Thank you in advance for your consideration and generosity.

2011 Halloween LBFD Kids

By Steve Yamamoto | October 31, 2011

On Halloween day 2011, The Long beach Fire Department (LBFD) stopped by Miller’s Children’s Hospital at Long Beach Memorial for their annual LBFD Kids Halloween visit.  This year there were about 23 Firefighters both on and off duty that came down to take the children of Miller’s “Trick or Treating.”  All of the children from the hospital were dressed up in their best costumes as they walked throughout the entire hospital for candy and treats.  There were also an array of spooky rooms setup by the hospital staff that the children could walk through.  This is just one of many LBFD Kids visits to the Miller’s Children’s Hospital throughout the year to help make the young patients stay more enjoyable. The LBFD Kids program is now in it’s 13th year and continues to bring smiles to the faces of many of the children who are treated at Miller's.  This program remains a success due to the continued efforts of Captain Greg Curiel, the Miller’s Children’s Hospital staff, and all of the volunteers from the Long Beach Fire Department.  Thank you to all for another great event.

Sparky at Pacific Hospital

By Steve Yamamoto | October 27, 2011

On October 21st, 2011, the Long Beach Fire Department and Sparky the Dog stopped by Pacific Hospital to say hello to over 300 students from the Jackie Robinson Academy.  The hospital staff did great job directing the numerous waves of kids and giving them all plastic fire helmets.  The kids were all very excited to give Sparky a "High Five."  After pictures were taken they had a chance to ask the Firefighters from Engine 7 an array of questions about their rig.  This was another great event where the kids had a chance to interact with their local Firefighters.

2011 Annual Firefighter Picnic

By Steve Yamamoto | October 26, 2011

On the afternoon of October 9th, 2011, the Long Beach Firefighter’s Memorial Association hosted the annual Firefighter Picnic at Gemrig Park.  This picnic has been a long-standing tradition dating back to the 1960’s.  The Memorial Association is comprised of Long Beach Fire Department members that volunteer their time to stage events like this and the annual fireworks show.  The founding members started the organization long ago to promote a few social gatherings throughout the year with the intent of building camaraderie and family togetherness within the Department. The picnic has been well attended over the years by many of our Department members of all generations.  Great food, fun games, and giant bounce houses are some of the many reasons for the great turnouts.  A big thank you to all of the memorial volunteers that worked hard to put this event together.
