On the afternoon of 4/6/09, at 1:00pm, the Long Beach Fire Department was dispatched to the intersection of Atlantic Ave. and Spring St.. Engine and Truck 7 along with Rescue 9 and Battalion Chief 3 were on scene quickly and noticed the damage to both vehicles and realized that the occupants needed to be extricated, that is to remove the mangled vehicle from the occupants. BC3 called for 2 additional Rescues, 1 Engine and 2 BLS ambulances, due to the amount of patients.

A white Honda Civic hatchback with 4 occupants was seen traveling Westbound on Spring approaching Atlantic, allegedly racing another silver vehicle (which drove away) at a high rate of speed. At the same time a gray Land Rover was traveling Northbound on Atlantic approaching Spring and had a green light, when it was “T-Boned” on the passenger side by the Civic. The 2 occupants (1-male and 1-female) did not require any extrication, but were transported by LBFD Paramedics, to a local hospital because of the impact to the vehicle.

The 4 occupants in the Civic (1-male and 3- female) needed to be extricated from the vehicle. T7 used the “Jaws of Life” and other hydraulic equipment to cut away the vehicle from the occupants. They broke away the glass that wasn’t already shattered, spread all doors off and cut away the roof so they could get to the occupants easier.

In total, 6 patients were transported to 2 local hospitals with various injuries.

Total units on scene: E7, T7, E9, R9, BC3, R13, R10, BLS 11, BLS 16, PIO4
