Multi Vehicle Accident With Ejected Victims Closes The 710 Freeway

On the evening of December 17, 2009, just after 7:00 pm, units from Long Beach Fire Department were dispatched to the south bound 710 freeway at the 91 to a report of an injury traffic accident with an overturned vehicle. Long Beach Engine 12 arrived on scene to find two SUV’s that were involved in a collision, one appearing to have rolled multiple times. The Captain of Engine 12, realizing there were a large number of patients involved declared a multiple casualty incident and called for additional resources. A total of 9 patients were riding inside a medium size SUV including two children that appeared to be 4-5 years old. Four adult patients were thrown from the vehicle as it rolled. 5 others remained inside. Two occupants of the larger SUV involved were uninjured in the collision. There were a total of 5 critical and 4 moderate patients transported from the scene to local area trauma centers. It is unknown, at this time if passengers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. The cause of this accident is currently under investigation. A total of 10 pieces of equipment responded from Long Beach Fire Department as well as one squad from LA County Fire and one unit from Compton Fire.
