Overturned Big Rig onto Car

By Steve Yamamoto | August 26, 2011

On August 24, 2011 at approximately 6:26 PM, units from the Long Beach Fire Department responded to reports of an overturned big rig with a vehicle pinned underneath it on the Northbound 405 freeway transition to the Southbound 710 freeway.  Engine and Rescue 13 arrived on scene and found that a tractor-trailer had in fact overturned with its cargo container on top of a compact car.  Upon further investigation they found that there was a female driver that was pinned inside of the small car and needed to be extricated quickly due to the severity of her injuries.  Firefighters immediately began rescue efforts to not only remove the container that was trapping the driver inside of the vehicle but also to provide emergency medical treatment to her.  Long Beach Fire Department Urban Search and Rescue (Task Force 6) along with LA County Fire Department Task Force 103 were called out for additional resources due to the complexity of the extrication.  After nearly 42 minutes of operations trying to lift the container off of the car and keeping the patient alive, the driver was carefully removed from the wreckage and quickly transported to the hospital.

The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
