Stubborn garage fire in 5’s area, going good…

By JJohnson | January 31, 2009

On the afternoon of Saturday, January 31st at 3:28pm, Long Beach Fire Department responded to reports of a garage fire on the 7800 block of Timor St. Engine 5 was first on scene in about 3 minutes and reported smoke showing from the garage, they pulled a hotline and began attacking the fire. Engine 18 was about 30 seconds behind and helped E5’s crew with fire attack. Once inside they noticed a big fire load and heavy smoke in the ceiling/converted storage area in the garage. Truck 19 went to the roof and performed vertical ventilation, using their chain saws and rubbish hooks to open the roof to help the crews inside, who were knocking down the fire.

The owner of the house was home and was able to get out unharmed with his dog. There were no injuries to Firefighters or civilians.

This fire continued to smolder until the Truck had to ventilate the other side of the pitched roof, as well as the crews inside had to remove the fire load from the rafters. The owner had a lot of wood products stored in the rafters. Thankfully the fire did not spread into the living area of the home.

Total units on scene included – E5, E18, T19, LACO E34, R17, BC2, PIO 4
