Big Rig vs Vehicle Traps Driver On The 710 Freeway

On the morning of January 27, 2010, at 10:00, Long Beach Fire Department units responded to the north bound 710 freeway just north of the Willow Street onramp to a report of a vehicle vs a big rig. Engine 13 arrive on scene to find a 26 year old male driver trapped inside his 4 door sedan. His vehicle was struck on the driver’s side with such force, his door and the side of the vehicle were pushed in on top of him, trapping him in the wreckage. It took fire crews 10 minutes, using the “Jaws of Life”, to cut the injured man from his wrecked car. He was transported to a local trauma center in moderate distress with numerous injuries to his left side. The driver was wearing his seat belt at the time of the collision. No other injuries were reported, including the driver of the big rig. The cause of this accident is currently under investigation. 16 firefighters responded to this incident.
