Big Rig Overturns And Traps Driver On The 710

By Jackawa Jackson | August 5, 2010

At 10:30 this morning, units from the Long Beach Fire Department were dispatched to the transition road from the north bound 405 to the south bound 710 freeway to a report of an overturned big rig with a trapped patient.  Engine 9 arrived on scene and found a tractor-trailer carrying a load of scrap metal had, in fact, overturned trapping the male driver in the wreckage.  The force of the impact also ruptured at least one of the truck’s saddle tanks sending a torrent of diesel fuel across the roadway.  It took crewmembers from Truck 7 roughly 10 minutes to cut the driver, who appeared to be in his 30’s, from his vehicle.  He was transported by LBFD rescue 13 to a local trauma center in moderate distress.  Fortunately, there were no other vehicles involved and no other injuries reported.  The transition road remained closed for several hours to facilitate clean up.  The cause of this accident is under investigation. A total of 22 fire department personnel responded to this incident.
