Attic Fire at Local Restaurant Quickly Extinguished
By Steve Yamamoto | January 14, 2011
This morning at 7:30 a.m., a first alarm assignment from the Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) was dispatched to a report of smoke inside the kitchen of Spires Restaurant off of Lakewood Blvd and Willow St. Upon arrival, Light Force 17 found the building had been evacuated and the interior was charged with smoke. Within minutes, fire erupted in the attic area that houses the air conditioning equipment. The fire was quickly knocked down by Engine 19 and crews began salvage operations inside the kitchen area to prevent any damage below. Long Beach Police Officers temporarily closed down Eastbound Willow St., while Firefighters overhauled the roof area to check for any hot spots. Long Beach Health Department responded and issued a closure notice due to the smoke contamination of the kitchen.
Thanks to the quick actions of Firefighters, this incident ended with only minimal damage and the restaurant will be reopened soon. LBFD Fire Investigators are working on determining the cause of this fire. There were a total of eight Fire Department Apparatus with 23 personnel working on-scene of this fire that took place in the 4th Council District.
