Martin Luther King Fatility Fire Anniversary News Conference
By frhayes | December 10, 2008
Last year, on December 14th, 2007 shortly after 2:00 A.M. Long Beach Firefighters responded to a structure fire in the 1000 block of Martin Luther King Blvd. This fire occurred in an un-permitted living space without smoke detectors, and impacted the city of Long Beach in such a tragic way, with the resulting deaths of the three young girls.
This year, with the anniversary date approaching, the Long Beach Fire department (LBFD) will be holding a news conference on Thursday, December 11, 2008 at 11:30 A.M. in the neighborhood where the fire occurred, in front of Fire Station #10, located at (1417 Peterson Ave. 90813).
The purpose of this news conference is to remember the three young girls lives, and to discuss what has been done to help prevent this type of tragedy from occurring in the future. In addition to this fire safety information will be presented, including space heater safety (probable cause of the fire), how to install and properly use smoke detectors, and the importance of having exit plans, and practicing them regularly in the home.
An announcement will also be made discussing the LBFD smoke detector distribution program, identifying all LBFD fire stations as being distribution locations for up to two (2) smoke detectors for residents who cannot afford them.
Attendees tentatively scheduled are elected city officials, members from the fire department, including crewmembers that responded, and were involved with the incident in 2007. Representatives from the Community Redevelopment Agency (Code Enforcement), and family members of the three young girls are also scheduled to attend. City officials will specifically address their issues and present relevant information, then the family members will speak, with the news conference ending with a brief question and answer period.
