Fire Races Through An Apartment On The East Side Of Long Beach

On April 7 at 7:15 pm, Long Beach Fire Department units were dispatched to a report of a fire alarm activation with smoke at 5525 E. Pacific Coast Highway. Companies responding were Engine 14, Truck 14, Rescue 14, Engine 17, Engine 4 and Battalion 2. Fire department units arrived onscene within 3-4 minutes from time of dispatch.
Upon arrival, Engine 14 found a two-story apartment building with fire rolling from a downstairs bedroom window, threatening to extend into the window of the apartment upstairs. The engine crew mounted an aggressive interior attack in an effort to contain the blaze and prevent the spread of the flames to upstairs and adjacent units. Fire companies made a diligent search for victims possibly trapped by the fire. The search was made in the involved unit as well as the units adjacent and above. Fortunately none were found. The truck company was used to provide lighting and to remove choking smoke from the structure. There were no reports of injury to citizens or to firefighters.
