Scuba Accident at the Outside Breakwater

By frhayes | November 10, 2008

On Saturday, November 8, 2008 at 9:44 A.M., Long Beach Fire Department Rescue Boat One (RB1) and Rescue Boat Two (RB2) responded to a reported Scuba Accident at 1 OUTSIDE BREAKWATER, LONG BEACH, CA. upon arrival a Scuba Accident incident was found.

The Initial call for help was received over UHF Ch 16,  from a Commercial Dive boat, the “Sea Bass” which had a group of divers at oil platform Eureka. The diver, a 57-year-old  male had been down to approximately 150 feet for an unknown time period. When upon ascent, at approximately 70 feet, he had a problem with his equipment and made an uncontrolled, rapid ascent to the surface. Once on the surface, the diver complained of a headache, chest pain, difficulty breathing, and numbness/tingling to his right lower leg.

Upon arrival of RB1, a Los Angeles County Sheriff Rescue Boat was found on scene with a paramedic treating the patient aboard the “Sea Bass”. The patient was transferred to the deck of RB2, with  patient care then being transferred to the RB1 Captain/Paramedic.

A Coast Guard helicopter was requested to hoist the patient and the RB1 Captain/Paramedic up into the helicopter for continued treatment and rapid transport to the hyper baric chamber at the Isthmus/Catalina. Upon arrival at the Isthmus patient care was then transferred to the Bay Watch paramedics for continued treatment.

After the successful treatment and transport of the patient to the hyper baric chamber RB2 continued to the Isthmus and delivered the patient’s dive gear and collected the RB1 Captain for return back to City of Long Beach.
