Notice: Function _load_textdomain_just_in_time was called incorrectly. Translation loading for the wptouch-pro domain was triggered too early. This is usually an indicator for some code in the plugin or theme running too early. Translations should be loaded at the init action or later. Please see Debugging in WordPress for more information. Early Morning 2nd Story Apartment Fire

By Steve Yamamoto | November 25, 2010

Early this morning at 5:45am, Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) units were called to a reported structure fire at 264 Covina Ave.  Upon Engine 8’s arrival, crew members found thick smoke and fire pouring out of the second story window of a four-plex.  Heavy black smoke was also seen rapidly coming out of the attic vents throughout the roof.  After an aggressive interior attack, the fire was extinguished in the kitchen as efforts then turned to the attic area above.  As Truck 14 began ventilating the roof, the roof deck collapsed causing a firefighter to fall into the attic space below.  After a few minutes the firefighter was rescued and luckily without any injury.  A primary search located two cats that were overcome by smoke inhalation.  Resuscitation efforts by Rescue 14 were unfortunately not successful even with the use of specialized animal masks.  It was fortunate however, that the resident of the involved unit was not home at the time of the fire.  One elderly female in an adjacent unit was examined by paramedics and did not require hospitalization.

The LBFD Arson Units are currently conducting an investigation into the cause of this blaze.  There were a total of eight LBFD apparatus that responded with 19 personnel operating on scene.  This incident occurred in the 3rd Council District and had units from the Long Beach Gas Department, Animal Control, and Southern California Edison also assisting.
