By Steve Yamamoto | January 14, 2011
This morning at 7:30 a.m., a first alarm assignment from the Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) was dispatched to a report of smoke inside the kitchen of Spires Restaurant off of Lakewood Blvd and Willow St. Upon arrival, Light Force 17 found the building had been evacuated and the interior was charged with smoke. Long Beach Police Officers temporarily closed down Eastbound Willow St., while Firefighters overhauled the roof area to check for any hot spots. Long Beach Health Department responded and issued a closure notice due to the smoke contamination of the kitchen.

Fire Sprinkler Saves a Local Restaurant
By Steve Yamamoto | January 12, 2011
On the morning of January 12th, 2011 around 6:30 AM, a first alarm assignment consisting of three Engines, a Truck, a Paramedic Rescue, and a Battalion Chief were dispatched to the Wingstop Restaurant at 1806 Ximeno Ave. for a reported water flow alarm. Upon arrival, Light Force-17 found one unit of a commercial building charged with smoke and the sprinkler system activated. Using access keys, Firefighters entered the business and found a small smoldering fire that was kept in check by a single sprinkler head.
After extinguishing the fire, Firefighters removed the furniture from the interior and began water removal operations. The damage was limited to a small storage area thanks to the working sprinkler system and the business will remain closed until it is inspected by the Health Department. This is another great example of how working fire sprinklers can save property and lives. Given the time of day and had this building not been sprinklered, this fire could have quickly and easily consumed the unit of origin and destroyed the entire building.
The cause of this fire that occurred in the 4th Council District is currently under investigation. There were a total of nine Fire Department apparatus and 24 personnel working on scene.
