House Fire Ignites in North Long Beach
By Steve Yamamoto | November 25, 2010
On Thanksgiving Day at around 6:00 pm, units from the Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) responded to a call of a reported house fire at 2108 E. 64th St. The passer-by stated they could see lots of smoke coming out of the home. Within minutes, Engine 12 arrived on scene and saw that there was heavy black smoke coming from the two-story house. Firefighters quickly charged their hose-line and forced entry through the front door. Because of an aggressive interior attack they quickly located the seat of the fire and extinguished the blaze before further damage could take place. Fortunately no one was injured due to the fact that the occupants were not home at the time of the fire. Sadly, five people were displaced from their home until repairs can be made and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
There were a total of eight Fire Department apparatus and 21 personnel operating on scene of this fire that took place in the 9th Council District.

Early Morning 2nd Story Apartment Fire
By Steve Yamamoto | November 25, 2010
Early this morning at 5:45am, Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) units were called to a reported structure fire at 264 Covina Ave. Upon Engine 8’s arrival, crew members found thick smoke and fire pouring out of the second story window of a four-plex. Heavy black smoke was also seen rapidly coming out of the attic vents throughout the roof. After an aggressive interior attack, the fire was extinguished in the kitchen as efforts then turned to the attic area above. As Truck 14 began ventilating the roof, the roof deck collapsed causing a firefighter to fall into the attic space below. After a few minutes the firefighter was rescued and luckily without any injury. A primary search located two cats that were overcome by smoke inhalation. Resuscitation efforts by Rescue 14 were unfortunately not successful even with the use of specialized animal masks. It was fortunate however, that the resident of the involved unit was not home at the time of the fire. One elderly female in an adjacent unit was examined by paramedics and did not require hospitalization.
The LBFD Arson Units are currently conducting an investigation into the cause of this blaze. There were a total of eight LBFD apparatus that responded with 19 personnel operating on scene. This incident occurred in the 3rd Council District and had units from the Long Beach Gas Department, Animal Control, and Southern California Edison also assisting.

Potential Explosion Hazard on the 710 Freeway
By Steve Yamamoto | November 18, 2010
Just after 11:00 am today, the Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) was called for reports of a tractor-trailer with a fuel tank fire that was actively leaking fuel on the Eastbound Gerald Desmond to the Northbound 710 freeway interchange. Upon Engine 6’s arrival they found a container truck that was pulled over with one of it’s saddle tanks rapidly leaking Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) out of it but luckily there was no fire. Firefighters wasted no time and charged a hose to push the highly flammable LNG vapors away from the truck and any ignition sources. The other crewmembers also acted quickly to shutdown the freeway that was heavily congested. Fortunately the driver got out safely and was uninjured. When Firefighters were attempting to stop the leak they noticed an unknown chemical that was clearly visible in red around the leaking area. Because of this the LBFD Hazardous Material Team (HazMat 24) was immediately called out to identify the questionable substance. Once the chemical was identified as safe to work around the Firefighters quickly stopped the leak and reopened the freeway. The cause of the fuel tank leak is currently under investigation.
Thanks to the efforts of the LBFD, the highly flammable vapors that could have caused an enormous explosion were put at bay and the freeway was reopened with no injuries. There were a total of 16 Fire Department Apparatus and 43 personnel operating on this incident that took place in the 1st Council District.
