Long Beach Fire Department Urban Search and Rescue Team Conduct Confined Space Exercise at the LBFD Training Center
By frhayes | September 23, 2009
On Wednesday, September 23, 2009 Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) units Engine 6, Engine 10, Engine 11, Rescue 13, Rescue 11 and Battalion Chief 5 participated in a confined space drill at the LBFD training center.
The purpose of the drill was to simulate the rescue of a trapped worker in an underground concrete piping network. Working in a confined space is very hazardous. There is danger from lack of oxygen, accumulation of toxic or explosive gases as well as physical dangers presented by the space itself. All of the US&R members worked in conjunction, utilizing various lowering and raising systems in an effort to extricate the patient from the space.
The evolution, even though a simulation, needed to be well choreographed in order to insure the safety of the rescuers and the patient. These types of exercises allow all of our US&R members to gain confidence working in confined spaces as well as maintain a high level of training in the latest rescue practices.
A total of 7 apparatus and approximately 30 personnel participated in this exercise.

Port Dive Operations Group (PDOG) Conducts Port Security Drill Near The Queen Mary
By frhayes | September 22, 2009
On Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at 8:30 A.M. a multi-jurisdiction and multi-department exercise was conducted at the Carnival Cruise line dock near the Queen Mary. Participants from the Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD), included Battalion Chief 2, Engine 6, and Rescue 11 joined by members of the Marine Safety Division that was represented by two Captains, Rescue Boat (RB) 2 and RB 3. The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) provided supervisors, divers and their boat. Members from the Los Angeles Port Police (LAPP) also provided their boat for support of the operations. These members combined are all part of a larger group known as the Port Dive Operations Group (PDOG).
The PDOG was developed to support the Coast Guard in increasing port security and to address any other incidents that could jeopardize port operations. The primary goal of the exercise was to simulate “Sweeping” the piers to locate, identify, and mark any simulated hazardous underwater devices. The emphasis of the program is to work together to provide adequate resources and a Unified Command (UC) command structure to efficiently address incidents within the Port of Long Beach and Los Angeles. In addition to Port security this team can also perform underwater searches, locate, and conduct recovery and salvage operations of planes, boats, and many other different objects. This is very important not only to assist with investigations, but also to ensure that the waterways entering and leaving the port are clear so that commerce in and out will not be interrupted.
This exercise is a great example of the coordinated effort from all of the jurisdictions and agencies that work in the port to be prepared for the multiple types of incidents that could occur.
