Backpack Donation

By Steve Yamamoto | September 6, 2011

On Tuesday, September 06, 2011, the Long Beach Fire Department was asked to make a donation of school supplies for a group of children challenged by economic hardships.  The request was made by the California Recreation Center of Long Beach located at 1550 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.  Through the efforts of our Spark of Love coordinator Firefighter Will Nash, 14 backpacks with school supplies were put together with donated funds.  Those supplies included pens, papers, notebooks, journals, rulers, and other items to help these children succeed in school.  The highlight of the event was definitely when Engine 1 stopped by to say hello to the grateful students that were about to start off their school year right.

Overturned Big Rig onto Car

By Steve Yamamoto | August 26, 2011

On August 24, 2011 at approximately 6:26 PM, units from the Long Beach Fire Department responded to reports of an overturned big rig with a vehicle pinned underneath it on the Northbound 405 freeway transition to the Southbound 710 freeway.  Engine and Rescue 13 arrived on scene and found that a tractor-trailer had in fact overturned with its cargo container on top of a compact car.  Upon further investigation they found that there was a female driver that was pinned inside of the small car and needed to be extricated quickly due to the severity of her injuries.  Firefighters immediately began rescue efforts to not only remove the container that was trapping the driver inside of the vehicle but also to provide emergency medical treatment to her.  Long Beach Fire Department Urban Search and Rescue (Task Force 6) along with LA County Fire Department Task Force 103 were called out for additional resources due to the complexity of the extrication.  After nearly 42 minutes of operations trying to lift the container off of the car and keeping the patient alive, the driver was carefully removed from the wreckage and quickly transported to the hospital.

The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.

2011 LBFD Kids Beach Fest

By Steve Yamamoto | August 24, 2011

On August the 17th, 2011 the Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) once again teamed up with Millers Children’s Hospital to participate in the annual “Beach Fest Day”, as a part of the LBFD Kids Program.  The mission of the program has always been to enhance the lives and well being of the chronically ill children at Millers Hospital through smiles and laughter.  This has been a longstanding tradition that was started back in the 90’s.

This year’s event had about 23 on and off-duty firefighters in attendance that spent time with the young hospital patients, escorting them around to various activities that were set up in the large tropically themed room.  Activities ranged from live music and dancing, to face painting, tic tac toe, a DJ for music, and the always popular bubble show. For those that built up an appetite from all of the activities, food and beverages were also provided for everyone as well as some very fun and decorative fruit displays.

Once again this marked another successful year at “Beach Fest.”  We want to thank everyone that made this day a success.

For more information on this event or future programs through the LBFD Kids Organization, please contact Captain Greg Curiel.

Fire Arsonist Apprehended

By Steve Yamamoto | July 15, 2011

Just after midnight on July 6th, 2011 a female arson suspect (Ardath Marie Scott) was observed by a Long Beach Police Officer lighting and throwing a destructive device commonly known as a molotov cocktail during a routine patrol at the corner of Pacific Coast Hwy. and Henderson Ave. It was then that Scott was found carrying five additional molotov cocktails in a bag. The officer immediately arrested her and called for the Long Beach Fire Department Arson unit to investigate the incident. She is currently in custody in lieu of $1,000,000 bail.  Fortunately there were no injuries or property damage. The case was presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney who filed four felony counts against Scott including the use of a destructive device and attempted arson.

Thanks to the efforts of the Long Beach Fire and Police Departments, the extremely dangerous acts of this individual were halted before anyone was seriously injured or property was destroyed.
