Bedroom Closet Fire

By JJohnson | April 22, 2009

The call came in at 1:50pm on 4/22/09 for reports of a house fire on the 3900 block of California Ave. Engine 9 was first on scene and reported smoke coming from multiple windows on the second floor of the single family dwelling.

They initiated fire attack by pulling their “Hotline” (1 3/4″ hose that the LBFD uses for interior fires) and getting quickly to the seat of the fire and stopping it from spreading to rest of the house. Engine 11 and 12 helped 9’s with the fire attack and Truck 11 laddered the 2 story house and proceeded to cut a heat hole, which is designed to release the heat and smoke from the involved room directly below them.

Engine 9  found the upstairs closet in one of the bedrooms fully invovled and were able to knock the fire down quickly. Arson investigators were called out due to the suspicious nature of how the fire started.

There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians. Total units on scene consisted of the following: E9, R9, E11, T11, E12, BC1, PIO4

The goal is to provide a realistic and safe training exercise for first responders and Airport personnel. This meets Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements to maintain the Airport’s operation certificate and demonstrate competence with federal aviation regulations. The last Airport triennial drill was conducted on April 22, 2006.

The activities include a mock natural disaster site, mass casualty incident scene and activation of several phases of the Airport’s emergency plan, such as a Joint Information Center (JIC) and Family Assistance Center (FAC). The JIC and FAC will be operated in conjunction with American Red Cross Greater Long Beach Chapter and National Transportation Safety Board, as well as airline CARE teams.

City of Long Beach agencies participating in the drill include Airport Operations, Long Beach Fire, Police, Search and Rescue, and the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Outside agency participants include the Los Angeles County Sheriff Air Support, fire departments within Los Angeles and Orange Counties, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Greater Long Beach Chapter of the American Red Cross, St. Mary Medical Center Disaster Resource Center, Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, U.S. Airways, various ambulance agencies and other Airport tenants. The Airport also anticipates the involvement of approximately 200 volunteers from across Long Beach and the Southern California region.

By frhayes | April 17, 2009

On Thursday, April 16 2009 at approximately 10:30 PM, Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) Units responded to a report of a structure fire on the cities west side, at 1347 West 14TH Street.

Upon arrival, the first in Engine Company found a large volume of fire coming from a two story commercial building and requested the incident be upgraded to a Second Alarm response.  A total of 45 Firefighters on 14 pieces of apparatus responded and worked to confine the fire to the unit of origin.

The area of origin appears to have occurred in a center unit used as a recording studio, a diesel injection business, and another vacant adjoining unit both received minor structural and smoke damage. The total estimated damage caused by the fire is approximately $500,000.

The LBFD Arson bureau is currently investigating the cause of the fire, and the Building Department has “boarded up” the structure to ensure security, and to prevent any injuries to the community.
