Naples Island’s Garden Club Spark of Love Donation
By frhayes | December 4, 2008
On Wednesday, December 3, 2008 members from the Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) attended the Naples Islands Garden Club’s Christmas Luncheon at the Virginia Country club. This was a special occasion this year due to the membership deciding this year that instead of conducting a “gift exchange” they would buy an unwrapped toy and donate it to the LBFD Spark of Love toy campaign. The response by their membership was so great, that a large truck was called in just to transport the toys to the warehouse.
This is a great example of a social club coming together to join with the LBFD to help others in the community.
Thank you to the Naples Island Garden Club, have a Merry Christmas, and know by your generous actions that you will be helping others by enriching their holiday season.
Naples Islands Garden Club
Est. 1973
Founded by 20 local women in 1973, our objectives are to create, promote and further an interest in amateur gardening; to support horticultural scholarship; to encourage neighborhood beautificationand environmental improvement; to conserve natural resources and promote an atmosphere of goodwill and fellowship within the community.
Our president is Sharon Civalleri.
Our activities are a Flower Show in the spring; celebration of May Day on May 1, and Arbor Day in March of each year. We award scholarships annually to horticultural students at Long Beach City College. We identify homes on the island with upgraded or consistently well-maintained landscaping.
We are in a current partnership with the Naples Improvement Assoc. and the City of Long Beach for the restoration of La Bella Fontana di Napoli fountain and park. In addition, we designed and maintain a median with olive trees and rosebushes at one of the entrances to Naples.
Fundraising events for these projects are the annual Flea Market in June, and a continuing Bridge group, Bunco group, and plant sales at our meetings.
We have just become a member of the California Garden Clubs, Inc.

LBFD Units On Display For Leadership Long Beach
By Jackawa Jackson | December 2, 2008
On the Morning of December 1st, companies from Long Beach Fire Department put on a large static display for the members of Leadership Long Beach outside of the ECOC. Units in attendance included, Task Force 6, Engine 24, Haz Mat 24, Truck 7, Engine 7, Rescue 2, and the LBFD LARCOPP vehicle. Also in attendance was the LBPD swat vehicle.
Leadership Long Beach was founded in 1989 by some of our community’s most influential and visionary stakeholders. These founders envisioned the formation of a civic improvement program that would serve the community by educating and motivating leaders on issues important to the future and sustainability of our city. A corresponding purpose was to create a network of knowledgeable and informed community leaders who would support each other as they continued in their professional and personal areas of endeavor.
All members of Leadership Long Beach were very appreciative of the time and effort exerted by LBFD members on a daily basis.

Volunteers Needed for Spark Of Love Toy Warehouse
By frhayes | December 1, 2008
Greetings All –
The holidays are here again and the Long Beach Fire Department’s “Spark of Love” Toy Drive is gearing up for another season to benefit needy children and families in the Long Beach area. The Toy Drive started back in the 50’s with just a few firefighters dipping into their own pockets to help out neighborhood kids in need, and has since turned into a major production serving hundreds of families and charitable groups each year.
The (new and improved) Toy Warehouse is now open for business and will be throughout the month of December. Members of the community and firefighters alike staff this program, so all are invited to stop by and help out. Working at the warehouse includes sorting and bagging toys, and some deliveries. This is actually more fun and social then actual “work”. Regardless, our charitable efforts go a long way in the community, and improving the season for those less fortunate.
The warehouse will be open most weekdays and a few weekends in December from 8 A.M. until 5 P.M. Hours will vary based on the workload, required deliveries, and schedule availability, so if you would like to participate, please call before stopping by. (562) 400-5310. Did I mention there’s FREE coffee, snacks, lunch, and hot cider?
The Toy Central Warehouse is located at: 2760 Studebaker (between Willow and Spring) in Long Beach. We are in the Parks & Recreation Service Yard.
Hope to see you there. If not, have a very Merry (and safe) Christmas.
Sincerely,
Firefighter Will Nash
